Dolly Rebecca Parton

Dolly Rebecca Parton was conceived in Pittman Center on January 19, 1946. She was born in Sevierville to Avie Lee Parton (a housewife) and Robert Lee Parton (a tobacco farmer). At 12, she was being telecast on Knoxville TV and at 13, she was already recording on a small label , and was performing at the Grand Ole Opry. After graduation from high school in 1964, she moved to Nashville to begin her country singing career. Carl Dean, a asphalt-paving company owner was her first love. They were married May 30 the 30th of May, 1966. Porter Wagoner saw her singing and hired her to appear on The Porter Wagoner Show (1961). She stayed with the show for seven years. Their duets were a hit and she performed with his group on the Grand Ole Opry; she also sold and toured records. In 1970, when her hit song "Joshua" hit the top spot, her popularity was just too big to compete with the fame of his. In 1974, she was by herself and recorded duets alongside his. She was no longer with him and began her solo career in 1974. Dolly was a massive success as a songwriter/singer. Dolly was awarded many Country Music Association awards (1968-1971 1971, 1975-1976, 1975-1976). The diminutive (5'0") beauty was a natural for television at the time, and by the middle of the 1970s she was often appearing on TV specials and talk shows before getting her own, Dolly (1976). Dolly was awarded her first Grammy award for Best Female Country Vocal Performance in 1977 for "Here You Come Again". Dolly made her debut in a film in 9 to 5, 1980. She received nominations for an Oscar for the title track and also for Grammy Awards 2/3: Best Country Song and Best Female Country Vocal Performance. Her most notable performances were in The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas (1982) and Rhinestone (1984), where she sang "Tennessee Homesick Blues". Dolly Parton Enterprises is her media empire that is worth $100 million. In 1986, she established Dollywood, a Tennessee theme park in Pigeon Forge. This was to commemorate her Smoky Mountain upbringing. She was a character in Dolly, the Dolly (1987) TV show. In 1988 she was awarded another Grammy: Best Country Performance Duo or Group with Vocals, for "Trio".
